ONLY 48%?
I was reading an article by Sterling Management Company about the business of dentistry. One statistic they presented surprised me – only forty-eight percent of dentists said their goal was to provide high quality treatment. I would have thought the number would be much higher. I wondered how more than half could go into their dental practices each day never intending to do more than the minimum for patients they would be seeing. How emotionally exciting or rewarding could that possibly be? I hope that somebody got the statistic wrong and that a greater number of my fellow dentists are at least trying to do a good job. If not, it’s really kind of sad.
I’ve been practicing dentistry for forty-nine years now. I have always felt the desire to do it to the best of my ability. I have always felt like I wanted to do the very best for those placing their trust in me. I have always desired to do what I would call “thoughtful dentistry”, and do something that made sense, and was overall the best quality treatment for each individual.
Years ago, before dental school, I worked for Ford Motor Company on an assembly line. I hated it. I would hate to do assembly line dentistry as is done in some clinics. There would be no joy, no sense of accomplishment, and no sense of really helping people. I want my patients to feel better, to function better, and to smile with more confidence. I don’t think I could have persisted so long doing what I do, except that it often just feels good to have accomplished something beneficial for somebody else.
I am certainly not the perfect dentist, although I do try to be. There is no single procedure I do in my office that somebody somewhere doesn’t do a little better. Overall,I think that I do pretty well. Generally,I am thoughtful in diagnosing what ought to be done to best help my patients. I take the time to explain carefully the available options, and I am skillful in performing the treatment my patients desire.
I most definitely have the goal of delivering high-quality treatment to all who come to me for dental care. I hope that more than the stated forty-eight percent of dentists out there have that goal too.
