Smile Evaluation | Smile Makeovers

Self-evaluation of your smile is relatively easy to do, and can help you decide whether you want to change the way your teeth look when your lips are parted in an expression of friendliness or amusement.  If you do decide to have your smile’s “look” changed via cosmetic dentistry, your self-evaluation will also come in handy as the first step in deciding what you want the end results to look like.  Set up a mirror, with clear, preferably natural light to illuminate your face, and smile normally.  Assess the reflection for the following points:

  • What is the current color of your teeth, and do you like this tint?

  • Do your teeth have a yellow or gray tinge to them?

  • Are all your teeth correctly proportioned to one another, or are some of them too big or small? Remember that teeth are naturally different sizes depending on their position and function. What you are looking for are teeth mismatched in size to their place in the sequence.

  • Are your teeth straight and even, or are some (or all) of them crooked?

  • Are any teeth excessively flat or pointed? Again, some teeth are supposed to have a certain shape (for example, canine teeth are frequently pointed).

While you are checking your smile, be sure to give an objective look at your gums as well:

  • Are your gums visible when you smile? If so, how much, and how noticeable is the effect?

  • What is the color of your gums? Pink is healthy, while red and puffy gums indicate irritation and possible gum disease (periodontal disease) or infection. Excessively pale gums could indicate anemia, though the treatment for that lies outside dentistry.

Finally, you should also pay attention to the following factors:

  • Is your breath neutral, or does it have a bad odor? Frequently, halitosis is accompanied by a persistent, unpleasant taste in the mouth.

  • What do other people notice about your smile? How do they react to it, and do you receive compliments or perhaps less flattering statements about it?

  • What do you like about your smile, and what do you dislike about it? What would you change about its appearance if you could?

Smile Design and Makeover | LVI SMile Catalog

Of all the expressions that we use each day to communicate our feelings and personality to other people, the smile is one of the most important. If you want to make a positive impression on people you meet, whether they are business associates or clients, friends, romantic interests, and so on, then having the correct smile to convey the essence of who you are is needed above all else.

Fortunately, a dazzling smile is not far off with the high quality tooth whitening, tooth bonding, porcelain crowns, and porcelain veneers.  Using these cutting edge, modern techniques, and a skilled dentist, you can achieve the smile of your dreams!

The first priority is to determine which smile you would prefer to aim for.  Everybody has a different concept of what the perfect smile is for his or her ideal makeover. There are almost endless sources of inspiration for the type of facial expression desired after the design and makeover process is finished.  Some of the most common ways people find smiles they want are:

  • Cultural factors, since your attitude to smiles may depend heavily on your background and desire to fit into it (or, in some cases, rebelliously defy its conventions).

  • The smiles of people you like and admire, such as friends or family.

  • Imitating the look of movie stars, media personalities, or high fashion models.

  • Matching their appearance more closely to their own inner sense of who they are and how they want to portray themselves to the world.

One of our most useful tools for helping you attain the smile that will be a true medium of self-expression is the use of the LVI smile catalog for individualized design.  This catalog consists of a series of a dozen different smiles devised by the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.  The varied smiles bear such names as “Youthful,” “Dominant,” or “Vigorous.”  All of the smiles are shown with the same model, using a different set of porcelain veneers.

The variable factors in these porcelain veneers include the shapes of the incisal edges, the offset of the teeth, and how pointy certain teeth are.  You are welcome to pick out your own choice, but if you are having difficulty deciding, we can provide advice or input also. Choosing the color of the porcelain veneers or cosmetic crowns used in this process is often accomplished with a shade guide.  However, the specific smile design is best tailored to the person.

For example, a businessperson may choose the “Dominant” style in order to look more forceful, decisive, and competent.  By contrast, a yoga instructor in their 50s wanting cosmetic dentistry might choose “Youthful” or “Hollywood” as their smile style instead.  Among the possible permutations, there’s sure to be one that’s “you” – and we have the means and skills necessary to bring your dreams into reality through modern cosmetic dentistry!

People with beautiful teeth and a great smile are terrifically lucky.  They can smile with confidence and actually appear younger, smarter, and healthier.  But not everybody is born with great looking teeth – they may be too big and crowded, too small with spaces or gaps, flared out too far, or be discolored.  Maybe teeth are chipped or worn because of accidents or because of clenching or grinding.  We often improve greatly one’s smile with a variety of cosmetic treatments.

Veneers

Vaneers are thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the front surfaces of natural teeth in order to change shape, or their position, or their colors. They usually take about two weeks from start to finish and can drastically improve a smile.

Bonding

A composite or plastic like material can be bonded onto the areas of teeth to repair chips and fractures, and to change their shape.  This is a one appointment procedure.
