Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry

Oral sedation is one of the newest methods of anxiety control in dentistry.  Sedatives delivered in pill form produce a very relaxed state in most patients.  Recent pharmacological developments have given dentistry oral drugs which produce deep relaxation while remaining very safe.  This was impossible as recently as ten years ago.

In addition to the oral conscience sedation medications that are available, we also have in the office, for those who care to use it, laughing gas or nitrous oxide.  There is no additional fee for its use.  Laughing gas helps to reduce anxiety and to make treatment more comfortable.  It also helps the time spent in the dental chair to pass more quickly.  If you have experienced a high level of anxiety or absolute fear of going to the dentist in the past, and this has made it impossible to get the dental care you have needed, we definately can help you.  We make you totally comfortable using sedation dentistry, and the time you spend in the dental chair will seem to aboslutely fly by.  Fortunately, sedation medications have an amnesic effect.  That means you’ll have very little, if any, memory of the sights, smells or sounds of your visit.

With ANXIETY-FREE DENTISTRY you can regain your health and have the fabulous smile you always wanted!

How Oral Conscious Sedation Works:

Certainly there are variations from one patient to the next depending on a variety of factors.  Generally, some mild medication is given to you  the night before your visit to the

office so that you can get a good night’s sleep.  In the morning, an hour before your appointment you will take a single pill on an empty stomach and you will have a responsible person bring you to your appointment.  Depending on how you feel when you arrive at the office – you may be given additional medication until your desired level of sedation is achieved.

Depending on the length of time needed to complete your treatment, different medications are used.  Some last as short as only one hour – but all day long can be managed as well.

Oral sedation medication takes the fear and anxiety out of having the dental visit.  You have very little, if any recall of time spent in treatment.

Some patients who benefit most from oral sedatives include:
  • Patients whose anxiety is higher than average, and who thus need shorter appointments.

  • “Special needs” and handicapped patients who want more done during each dental visit.

  • Patients who want a lot of work done during each appointment, and/or those who want more comfort.

  • People whose mouths are difficult to numb and who therefore need their nervous system to be “toned down.”

  • People susceptible to gagging.

Some of the nicest people I know are dentists.  However, there are individuals that for a variety of reasons simply do not really like to go to the dentist at all.  They experience more than a normal amount of anxiety during dental treatment.  Sometime the fear is so great that visits to the dentist simply cannot be tolerated, and yet dental care must be received if very bad consequences are to be avoided.  So we have sedation dentistry to help these people.

In most situations, a degree of patient cooperation is needed in order to accomplish treatment.  We have at our disposal several medications that can be taken orally designed to relieve anxiety and allow relaxation – even in the dental chair.  A state of unconscienciousness is not what we want as in IV or general anesthesia, but a state of little awareness of what is going on.  Fear is gone, anxiety is relieved, treatment is accomplished – and hardly any memory of the experience remains.

It works extremely well and even almost always allows even the most extreme dental phobic to obtain needed dental care.
